Family Dentist in The Woodlands, TX
Periodontal, or gum, disease may be the most common chronic infection in humans. 3 out of 4 American adults have it. It is the number one cause of tooth loss in the United States.
Your gums and underlying bone provide the foundation for your teeth. Harmful bacteria can infect your gums and cause harmful pockets or gaps around your teeth. These pockets cause damage to the foundation around your teeth and can lead to other health issues.
Only a dental professional can measure your pockets. If you have seen changes in your gums, noticed bleeding or spaces in your teeth, you may have gum disease. Sometimes bad breath is also an indicator.
There has been a documented link between gum disease and heart illness. Studies have shown that the incidence of heart disease is about twice as high in people with periodontal disease. There may also be links to lung disease, osteopenia, preterm and low birth weight babies, stroke, and uncontrolled diabetes.
There are nonsurgical ways to treat periodontal disease. The best way to determine if you are at risk is to make an appointment with a dental professional.
